Taking care of God’s creation
The new Creation Care Program has commenced in Victor Larco, Trujillo, La Libertad with the collaboration of the Evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed Church of Peru, and A Rocha Peru’s Iglesia Verde Project. Andrea Mitzy Regalado Gálvez is coordinating the activities as the new Project Officer. The project is off to a great start and we are making significant strides in increasing children’s environmental awareness and motivation and they are learning how they can take care of God’s creation. Since July, a syllabus was designed for the first mini-project, with the topics and content to be covered for the environmental workshops.
20 children have been identified for the workshops across two different age groups, 6-9 and 10-14. For the mini-project, “El Jardin de Los Ninos”, the children established a vision and objectives. They wanted to plant fruit trees such as mandarin, apple, orange, avocado, guaba, Aguaymanto (goldenberry), and a number of root, leaf, and aromatic plants. They will also learn how to compost.
The children have had 16 environmental workshops across a number of topics. They have learnt how to start germinating peas, lentils, flaxseeds, and spinach. In addition, they have been making nutritious soil from vegetable waste, learning about organic and inorganic waste and compost, how to plant fruit trees with the Ellen White method, and more.
